New Standard Licence

Standard licence changed to cc-by

Recent discussion on the appropriate licencing terms for scientific data raised theissue that the choice of a licence for data publications should not be on narrow terms. A licence with too strict terms on re-use of data might be an obstacle to innovative future uses. We therefore decided to change the standard licence type in SDDB from "Creative Commons by attribution, non-commecial, share alike" to "Creative Commons by attribution".

Following on from the results of the project "Publication and citation of scientific primary data" (STD-DOI ) we try to transfer the tried and tested practices of formal scientific communication and literature into the development of new practices for the publication and citation of data. Even though most scientific literature is not actually licenced to be used solely by attribution of authrorship, it has been common practice for centuries to cite the work of other authors and their original ideas.

In the light of the current discussion on Open Access to data, and in analogy to established practice in dealing with scientific literature, we concluded that the "Creative Commonsby attribution " licence would be the most appropriate licence for scientific data publications and therefore recommend its use.
