Terms used in the Scientific Drilling Database

This glossary gives an overview of terms used in the Scientific Drilling Database.

 Activity  Any activity in the field, during which a sample was taken. It always references a specific instrument (Gear) used for sampling.
 DOI  Digital Object Identifier, a persistent unique digital identifier used to identify datasets in SDDB. The DOI resolver leads you to the location of the referenced object. In SDDB it points to the URL from there the dataset can be accessed.
 Expedition  Fieldwork campain in the context of a scientific drilling Program.
 Gear  Instrument used to take a sample from the field. The Gear used is always linked to an Activity in the field.
 Parameter  Value of a measurement performed on a sample or obtained from a calculation. It is always linked to an Activity.
 Program  Organisational and scientific framework of a scientific drilling project.
 Site  Location in the field, at which one or more sampling Activities took place. Sites are always part of a fieldwork campain, or Expedition.
