The SDDB data policy explained

The Scientific Drilling Database is operated by the ICDP Operational Support Group and the Data Center of GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam. It holds data resulting from ICDP projects and other projects supported by the ICDP Operational Support Group. By publishing these data online we hope to encourage a wider use of results from scientific continental drilling projects.

In the age of electronic media intellectual property rights and "fair use" have become hotly contested issues. ICDP encourages the sharing of data to promote scientific progress. GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam, where the Operational Support Group and SDDB are hosted, is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German National Research Centres. The Helmholtz Association is one of the initial signatories of the "Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities" and actively supports Open Access to scientific data through the Helmholtz Open Access Project. We therefore encourage authors to publish their data in the spirit of the Berlin Declaration.

Most data in the SDDB are published under a Creative Commons license under the condition that the authors of the dataset are cited (CC BY). We chose this licence because it is closest to the custom of citation of sources in formal science communication and literature. More restrictive licence types may prohibit innovative future use and should therefore be avoided. 

Please note that in some cases data might be published under a different license. As an author submitting data to SDDB it is your choice to decide which license is appropriate. In some cases your home institution has its own guidelines which license to choose. We encourage you to take part in data sharing and thus to choose a Creative Commons license.
